Kelly Gronewold, PT, DPT, ATC and Lori Vogel, PTA with Quincy Medical Group’s physical therapy department recently became certified lymphedema therapists.

Lymphedema is a chronic, often progressive condition that can result in excess swelling of the head, arm, leg, and/or trunk caused by disruption of the lymphatic system. Left untreated, lymphedema can lead to cellulitis, a potentially serious bacterial skin infection.

The condition can occur following some surgeries, trauma, disease, or radiation therapy that results in damage to the lymphatic system.

Treatment for lymphedema helps reduce the edematous body part through hands-on manual treatment, bandaging, and compression therapy to allow the patient to return to their prior level of function.

“Most people notice an increase in function in regards to mobility and activities of daily living. Therefore, improving the patient’s overall well-being,” Gronewold said.
