On track

Earth moving work for the new PHS all-weather track got under way last week.

The new track at Palmyra High School will include an artificial turf, following action by the R-I Board of Education during a special meeting last Monday.

In addition to approving the $450,000 synthetic turf, the board approved a contract with CTS for the rest of the work to be done as approved by the passage of the no tax increase bond issue in early April.

According to Superintendent Kirt Malone, work got underway last week on the new track with work planned as soon as possible on the rest of the projects.

“We have seen a lot of excitement this week when dirt started moving  for the new track,” he said, adding it is planned to have the track completed by August. “We are also excited to see each of the projects beginning this spring, knowing that in the end our students and our programs will benefit and grow as a result. We also have some very happy cooks  at the middle school who can’t wait to get to work in their new surroundings next fall.”

The base bid on the track was for $1,031,000. With the artificial turf, the approximate bid for the track and field is $1,481,000.
