The Palmyra R-I School District is preparing for whatever winter brings by issuing a new hard-surface bus pickup and drop off policy.

“Last winter presented us with a lot of adverse weather and icy road conditions for a significant time. In all, we lost 15 days of school to inclement weather last school year.” said Kirt Malone, R-I superintendent, in a memo issued to parents Nov. 5.

As a result, Malone said, the  district prepared late start and hard surface roads only options for use during the winter season or for emergencies.

“The need to close school, or delay the opening of school, for the safety of our students and staff is a decision we take very seriously,” Malone said. “Students are better served both academically and socially by being in school, however, student and staff welfare is our top priority.”
