Tommie Dee Horton, 85, of Quincy, Ill., passed away on Monday, May 13, 2019, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.
He was born Sept. 9, 1933, in Hannibal, Mo., the son of D.B. and Laona Horton. Tommie met the love of his life, Betty Ruth Minor, on a blind date when he was 17 and Betty was 15. They were married on July 12, 1953, in the home of Tommie’s parents in Palmyra. She preceded him in death on July 3, 2010
Survivors include a daughter, Monica Begley (and husband Phillip), Quincy; son, Michael Horton, Riverview, Fla.; grandchildren, Sarah DeBoer (and Chad Fults), Haslet, Texas; Clinton Begley, Springfield, Ore.; Ashley Horton (and RJ Lewis), Omaha, Neb.; and Steven Link (and wife, Beth), Garland, Texas; great-grandchildren: Trey Plummer and Megan Chamberlain, Haslet; and Liam and Tristan Horton, Omaha.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; and daughter, Brenda Sue Link.
Tommie had many good friends and golfing buddies, including Clif Shepherd, Charles Mann and Carl Webber, among many others.
He attended many grade schools in Hannibal, Mo., and later graduated from Palmyra High School, where he played football.
After high school he enlisted in the Air Force where he was an aircraft mechanic.
He owned and operated Horton’s Shell service station and S&H Garage in Hannibal in the 70s and 80s, and later worked and retired as an industrial mechanic at American Cyanamid in Palmyra.
Tommie’s greatest joy was his family, dogs, Sparky, Duke and Chrissy; and weekly golf nights with the Palmyra Thursday evening gang.
He was a member of the American Legion, a volunteer at the Palmyra Food Pantry, and active in the First Presbyterian Church in Palmyra.
Visitation will be held at 10:15 a.m., and a celebration of his life will be at 11 a.m., on Friday, May 17, at the First Presbyterian Church in Palmyra. Rev. Roger Ricketts will officiate. There will be a meal following the service, at the church. Private family interment will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Hannibal.
Honorary pallbearers will be Sarah DeBoer, Clinton Begley, Steven Link, Ashley Horton, Trey Plummer, Megan Chamberlain, Phillip Begley and Clif Shepherd.
Memorials may be made to the Palmyra Food Pantry.
