The PHS boys wrestling team will have its largest group yet going to state this week after a strong showing at districts.
Competing in the Class 1, District 3 Tournamentat Marceline, Friday and Saturday, eight of the team’s 14 wrestlers earned a trip to the state tournament to be held in Mizzou Arena in Columbia, this Thursday through Saturday.
Qualifying for state were Collin Arch (120), Brayden Stevens (126), Hayes Miller (145), Ross Arch (152), Conner Roberts (170), Nolyn Richards (182), Luke Triplett (195) and Weston King (285).
Palmyra’s eight state qualifiers topped the four who advanced to state in both the previous two seasons.
“We expected to have more this year than years past, but I think eight surprised a lot of people,” said Coach Josh Buatte, who was pleased with his team’s showing.
The eight top four district finishers was also impressive considering seven of them had to work their way through the consolation bracket.
“That really shows how tough they really are,” Buatte said. “It’s a long hard road that way, especially in this district, which is a really tough district with some of the best teams in the state.”
