The PHS varsity softball team suffered its first Clarence Cannon defeat, 9-7, at Highland last Wednesday.
Palmyra’s Cameron O’Brien drove in the game’s first run with a double in the top of the first, but the Cougars took control of the game with five runs in the bottom of the inning.
The Lady Panthers cut the deficit with a run in the third, but Highland added two more in the fourth.
Palmyra took advantage of a hit batsman, a walk and an error along with two base hits to tie the game in the top of the fifth.
However, the Cougars answered with two in the bottom of the inning and held Palmyra scoreless in the final two innings to complete the win.
Palmyra won a conference game the day before, 9-8, at Brookfield.
The Lady Panthers looked like they assured a positive outcome with three runs in the first and six in the third, but Brookfield came back with five five in the bottom of the third, one in the fifth and two in the seventh before getting the final out with the tying run at first base.
