The Lady Panthers were not going to be denied a chance to win a state softball title despite seemingly insurmountable odds.
Down by three runs and three outs away from elimination in the Class 2 state softball semifinals in Springfield Friday, Palmyra came back on the strength of a grand slam by Bailey Lovelace and then got the final three outs for an nail-biting 9-8 win over Marceline.
The game started out as a pitching duel as the game went scoreless into the fourth inning.
Palmyra’s Brooke Lawson held the Lady Tigers hitless while working around two Lady Panther errors.
“You could tell we played tight all game, which isn’t typical for our team,” said Coach Jill Arch, whose team committed four errors that included three dropped pop flies.
“They just couldn’t seem to relax,” Arch said.
