The Lady Panthers could not comeback one more time and lost 2-0 to Sherwood in the Class 2, state title game Saturday.

Palmyra went up against a buzz saw of a pitcher--Mackenzie Morgan, a Division 1 recruit committed to Arizona State--who had given up just two earned runs all season--and she pitched a one-hit gem, striking out 14 and walking none.

Still, the Lady Panthers got opportunities to score and come back behind their own strong pitcher, Brooke Lawson, who held Sherwood to five hits and three walks while striking out nine in going the distance.

Lawson, struggled a little in the first inning, hitting the first batter and giving up a double and single as Sherwood took a 1-0 lead.

The senior right hander settled down after that and held the Lady Marksmen in check until the fifth when she walked three and gave up a sacrifice fly.

“She pitched a really nice ball game,” said Coach Jill Arch. “It took her an inning to settle down, and then she was just fine.”

Meanwhile, Morgan, who was 23-4 coming into the game,  struck out eight of the first nine batters she faced, before running into her only difficult inning of the game.
