The PHS varsity boys golf team opened the season by taking second place at the Centralia Tri at Norwoods Tuesday and first place at the Elsberry Quad Thursday. 

“I feel like we’re really getting some good experience and progressing well this year,” said Coach Marty Smyser, after his team took first place over Elsberry and Winfield on Thursday.

“As the year progresses, we just really want to improve everyday and put ourselves in situations to be successful long term,” he said. 

“I’m happy with the team’s effort at practice and I believe that will continue to pay dividends throughout the season.”

The Palmyra varsity played at Norwoods Tuesday finishing with a 183, placing second place behind Westran by 14 strokes. Centralia took third place with a final score of 185. 

Scoring for Palmyra were Ragar McKinney, 44, Brock Bollin, 45, and Mason Burch, Brady Shively and Jacob Webster with 47s. 

Palmyra’s junior varsity squad finished their round with a 216.

The varsity squad dominated at Elsberry Thursday, finishing with a 181 to finish ahead of the Palmyra JV, 211, Elsberry, 233, and Winfield, 269.

Shively took medalist honors with an eight-over-par 44.

Also competing on varsity for the Panthers were McKinney and Bollin, 45, Matt Maas, 47, and Webster, 50. 

Competing on the junior varsity squad were Elijah Edwards, 52, Preston Meyers, Patrick Bailey, and Laydin Lochman with 53s, and Jared DeHaan with a 60.
