Samuel “Sam” N. Zook

Samuel “Sam” N. Zook, 79, of St. Joseph, Mo., formerly of Hannibal, Mo. and Philadelphia, Mo., passed away at 12:39 p.m., Monday, July 20, 2020, at Diversicare in St. Joseph.

Samuel was born March 7, 1941, in Cherry Box, Mo. He was the third of six children born to Aaron Leroy Zook and Naomi Mae Detwiler Zook. He was married on Oct. 29, 1966 to Janet Troyer Zook in Burr Oak, Mich.  She survives in Savannah, Mo.

Other survivors include three daughters, Janice Quinn, Rogers, Ark.; Elizabeth Bell (Thomas), Hamilton, Ill.; and Mary Piatt (Shaun), Country Club, Mo.; four brothers, Marlin Zook, Mechanicsburg, Pa.; James Zook, Hesston, Kan.; Phillip Zook, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and Lester Zook, Deep River, Iowa; and one sister, Rozella Lehman, Apple Creek, Ohio.

He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and numerous extended family.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents and his foster sister, Joy Ward.

Professionally, Sam was the owner and operator of Zook’s Cleaning and Upholstering in Hannibal for over 20 years. He retired in 2005.

Sam loved being outdoors and enjoyed gardening and fishing.  He was known for “tinkering” on lawn mowers and engines.  He also had a great love of jigsaw puzzles. 

Watching old westerns and listening to old Gospel music were also some of Sam’s favorites.

Sam served with the Mennonite Voluntary Service Units in Missouri, Ohio and Michigan.

He was a lifelong member of Pea Ridge Mennonite Community Church. 

A private, family only graveside service and burial will be held  Friday, Aug. 7, at Pea Ridge Community Church Cemetery in Palmyra.
