Bert Richard Cottrell

Mr. Bert Richard Cottrell, 84, La Grange, Mo., passed away, Saturday, Dec. 5, 2020, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill.

He was born Nov. 12, 1936, in La Grange, a son of Bert and Lorena Rose Hoskins Cottrell.  He married Patricia Ann Yager on Jan. 11, 1959, in La Grange.  She survives.

Other survivors include one son, Kevin (LaVonne) Cottrell, Ewing; two daughters, Tammy (Brad) Neil, Palmyra; and Pamela (Randy) Shubert, Camdenton, Mo.; one brother, Roger (Nancy) Cottrell, La Grange; six grandsons, Nathan (Joni) Bennett, Kirksville, Mo.; Caleb Shubert, Edina, Mo.; Matt (Ashlynn) Bennett, Ewing, Mo.; Brady Neil, Braxden Neil and Brayden Neil, all of Palmyra; three granddaughters, Jessica Lasater, Wentzville, Mo., Cassandra Cottrell, Austin, Texas; and Teddie Neil and fiancée Tyler Mays, Palmyra; great-grandsons, Chase Lasater, Wentzville; and Tristan Bennett, Kirksville; and several nieces and nephews.  

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Bert was a member of the La Grange Christian Church.  He held numerous positions and served as union shop steward at Gardner Denver from 1955 to 1967 and then worked in the natural gas industry for 30 years retiring in 1997.  

Bert owned and operated Cottrell and Sons Welding from 1959 until 2015, enjoying 56 years of business.  

He was a charter member of the La Grange Lions Club, had been a Boy Scout troop leader and was a proud member of the Order of the Arrow.  

He also had been a 26-year active volunteer firefighter with the La Grange Fire Dept. and received a lifetime membership in the organization in 2019. 

He also had held positions on the La Grange City Council, Lewis County C-I School Board and the Mark Twain Credit Union Board.  

His greatest love was spending time with his family.

Bert was in the Army Reserves enlisting in 1960 and was discharged in 1966.  He did his basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and then served at Fort Dix, N.J., in heavy equipment operation.

Because of COVID-19, private family services will be held with burial in Mark’s Cemetery in La Grange.

Pallbearers will be Kevin Cottrell and Bert’s grandchildren.

Honorary pallbearers will be Roger Cottrell, Tony Cottrell and Doug Johnson.
