A proud Palmyra grandmother announces fourth generation of her family to be a part of the military.

Linda Steinbeck’s grandson, Randle (Randy) Joseph Steinbeck will be commissioned May 27 while her other grandson, Jakob Ronald Steinbeck has enlisted in the United States Air Force.

Randy and Jakob are the children of M. Sgt. Jeffrey Steinbeck, United States Air Force, Ret. and Rachelle Steinbeck, Ramstein, Germany.

They are also the grandsons of military retirees, Sgt. Maj. Joseph L. Steinbeck Jr., United States Marine Corps and M. Sgt. Ronald Twiss, United States Air Force; and great-grandsons of E. Eugene Dudgeon and Joseph L. Steinbeck Sr., who served in the United States Army, enlisting in 1943 and serving in the Philippines and Europe.

According to Steinbeck, four years ago, Randy Steinbeck received acceptances from Yale University, MIT, Georgetown University, the University of Washington, Harvard University, Clark Honors College and the University of Oregon, West Point, the U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy.

On May 27, Randy will graduate from Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass., with a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics and a

secondary degree in government.

Having served as a cadet in the Army ROTC Paul Revere Battalion at MIT the past four years, the United States Army announced the commissioning of Second Lieutenant Steinbeck by Chief of Staff of the Army Gen. James C. McConville, Steinbeck said.

As a military retiree, his father will give his son his first salute at the commissioning ceremony.

The proud grandmother also announced the enlistment of Jakob Steinbeck into the United States Air Force, following his father’s footsteps.

Jakob will leave May 25 from Frankfurt International Airport for six weeks of basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, and will then go through seven months of training at the Radar, Airfield and Weather Systems (RAWS) Tech School at Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, Miss, Steinbeck said.

The young men’s father works for the USO in retirement and their mother is an elementary teacher at Ramstein Elementary School on base in Germany.

Area relatives of the Steinbeck’s are Joelle Goodwin and family, Palmyra; John Steinbeck, LaGrange; Amber Steinbeck, Kansas City; Kimber Steinbeck, Canton; and Shirley Hetzler and family, Lewistown.
