The PHS varsity softball team opened the season with a fifth place finish in the ever-competitive Troy Lead-off Tournament Friday and Saturday.
The Lady Panthers ended up going 2-2, beating Fort Zumwalt South and Bowling Green while falling to Fulton and Timberland.
Palmyra opened the tournament Friday afternoon with a 6-1 win over Fort Zumwalt South, behind the strong pitching of Jazlin Gottman.
The senior right-hander pitched all six innings, giving up just one earned run on threes hits and three walks, while striking out seven.
Palmyra jumped out quickly, scoring four runs in the top of the first and two in the second, while their opponents scored their only run in the first.
Palmyra’s initial rally featured singles by Bella McBride, Jansen Juette and Hailey Kroeger and a big double by Jenna McVeigh.
Palmyra then lost to Fulton, 12-1 Friday evening.
The Lady Panthers scored the game’s first run before Fulton put the win out of reach with five in the third and seven in the fourth.
Palmyra bounced back the next morning with a 5-0 win over Bowling Green behind another strong performance by Gottman, who held the opponents to five hits and one walk while striking out seven in five innings.
The Lady Panthers scored two in the first on singles by Redd, Juette and Gottman along with a big Bowling Green error.
A double by Candra King followed by singles by McBride, Redd and Alaina Loman keyed the team’s three-run fourth.
Playing for fourth place against Timberland in the late afternoon, Palmyra lost 10-2 after giving up five runs in the first, three in the second and two in the third.
