The PHS varsity tennis team opened the 2021 season last week by going 1-2 with matches against Moberly, Quincy Notre Dame and Hannibal. 

The Lady Panthers shut out Moberly, 9-0, at home, Tuesday in the season opener.

Winning singles matches were Katy Rindom, 8-5, over Kristyn Kruse; Maura Gottman, 9-4, over Hallie Kroner; Molly Gottman, 8-1, over Teagan Smith; Jaynee Durst, 8-1, over Aleiya Myers; Abbey Mann, 8-1, over Samantha Carl; and Jeorgia O’Brien, 8-3, over Catelyn Robert.

In doubles, Rindom and Maura Gottman beat Kruse and Kroner, 8-2; Molly Gottman and Mann beat Smith and Myers, 8-4; and Durst and O’Brien beat Carl and Roberts, 8-1.

It was also senior night for the team. Honored along with their parents were seniors, Katy Rindom and Jaynee Durst.

The junior varsity squad also won 8-0.

Winning doubles matches were Hadlie Kroeger and Emmalee Drebes, 6-0; Marina Meyer and Ashley Bode, 6-2; Ava Browning and Maggie Keim, 6-0; Elizabeth Salo and Kenzie Bollin, 6-1; Rilee Shrum and Natalie Bartz, 6-0; Laura Noland and Jaymee Price -Brocksmith, 6-2; Devyn Spratt and Ashlyn Akerson, 6-1; and Ruby Comstock and Lakeyn Smith, 6-0.

The Lady Panthers also hosted QND Wednesday, and the varsity squad lost 7-2.

Earning the team’s lone singles victory was Durst, 8-3, over Ava Jacobson.

Winning in doubles were Durst and O’Brien, 8-5, over Jacobson and Aly Young.

The JV squad won 5-1 over QND

Winning matches were: Kroeger and Drebes, 6-1; Meyer and Bode, 6-1; Browning and Keim, 6-0; Salo and Bollin, 6-4; and Shrum and Bartz, 6-2.

The Lady Panthers ended the week with a 4-5 loss at Hannibal Thursday.

Winning singles matches were: Maura Gottman, 8-5, over Gracie Martin; Durst, 8-5, over Brooklyn Haye; and O’Brien, 8-5, over Brynn Burton.

Winning their doubles match were Rindom and Maura Gottman, 8-6, over Emma Haner and Martin.

The JV squad won 8-1 to go 3-0 on the season.

Winning doubles matches were: Kroeger and Drebes, 8-3; Meyer and Bode, 8-6; Browning and Keim, 8-4; Salo and White,  8-6; Bollin and Shrum, 8-1, Bartz and Noland, 8-2; Spratt and Akerson, 8-6; and Smith and Comstock, 8-4.  

The Lady Panthers were also scheduled to host Columbia Battle Saturday, but results were not available for this issue.

Palmyra was recently assigned to Class 1, District 8 this season along with Kirksville, Mexico and Moberly.
