The PHS varsity softball team opened Clarence Cannon Conference play with a 4-1 loss to visiting Monroe City, Thursday.
The Lady Panthers out-hit their opponents 5-4, but could only muster one unearned run in the sixth inning after falling behind 2-0.
Jazlin Gottman pitched a complete game for Palmyra (5-3), and struck out nine while walking three.
Monroe City (4-4) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth, went up 2-0 in the top of the sixth and added two insurance runs in the seventh.
Monroe City’s junior pitcher, Kailynn Fuemmeier, struck out six and didn’t issue a walk over seven innings to earn the win.
Bella McBride led Palmyra with two hits. Also hitting safely were Hailey Kroeger, Lexie Peuster and Jenna McVeigh.
Gottman isn’t the only Lady Panther pitcher to throw a no hitter for Palmyra this season.
Kennedy Wilson, a junior right hander, retired all 21 batters she faced for a perfect game in an 8-0 win at home over LaPlata Tuesday.
Wilson struck out nine over seven innings and allowed only five batted balls into the outfield, all four outs including the final three of the ball game.
Wilson’s no-no followed her team mate’s two no-hitters over Louisiana and Mark Twain in the previous contests.
Palmyra’s first three batters in the line-up, Abbey Redd, Alaina Loman and Gottman, sparked the offense by going a collective 7-for-11 with five runs scored and four RBI.
Yet, the Lady Panthers didn’t score until the third inning and led only 4-0 going into the bottom of the sixth when they put the game away with four more runs.
The team was scheduled to be busy on the road this week with games Monday at Moberly, Tuesday at Clark County and Thursday at Bowling Green.
