The PHS varsity girls softball team had a portion of the conference title in sight, but could not hold on as Centralia came from behind to beat the Lady Panthers, 5-4, in Palmyra Saturday.

Palmyra’s Jazlin Gottman delivers a pitch in the first inning of Saturday’s game against Centralia as infields (from left) Jansen Juette, Abbey Redd and Kennedy Wilson play in for a bunt.
Palmyra (11-6) took an early 2-0 lead, but ended up finishing 5-2, a game behind Macon, for second place in the Clarence Cannon Conference.
Despite the tough loss, Coach Alexis Meyers was upbeat as the team moved into district tournament action on the home field this week.
“I’m looking forward to seeing what this team can accomplish this postseason for sure,” said Meyers whose team last year saw its season end with a loss to Monroe City in the district championship game.
Meyers said this year’s team can advance from districts if it can get back in gear leading up to the team’s first-round game against Louisiana Wednesday.
“We need to get our offense rolling again, and we should be a top contender to make it out of districts,” Meyers said. “I’m hoping we can build some confidence and get back on the same page in these last few regular season games and the first round of districts.”
Palmyra’s playing time has been limited of late due to the weather.
A game against Troy was washed out Wednesday, and Thursday’s conference finale against Centralia had to be moved to Saturday in place of the regular scheduled game at Columbia Hickman.
The team’s last previous game was Monday when the Lady Panthers saw their six-game winning streak end with a 6-0 defeat at Canton.
The Lady Tigers scored a run in the first, two in the second and three more in the fourth, and Palmyra had no answer against the Canton starting pitcher, Kenzie Guilfoyle, who scattered seven hits while striking out 10 and walking none.
Abbey Redd, Jansen Juette and Lexie Peuster all had two hits each for Palmyra.
Kennedy Wilson started on the mound and went two innings, giving up three runs, on four hits and two walks while striking out three.
Jazline Gottman pitched the final four innings and gave up thtee runs on four hits and two walks while striking out nine.
