The PHS varsity football team lost their regular-season finale, 12-0, at Centralia, but managed to hold onto the second seed and a first round bye in the upcoming Class 2, District 7 tournament.

The Panther defensive unit huddles with assistant coach Tyler Krietemeyer during Friday’s game at Centralia.
The 4-5 Panthers managed just 173 offensive yards while giving up two touchdown passes in getting shut out for the second time this season.
Palmyra was the second district seed going into the game and Macon won big, 54-30, at Clark County, and actually jumped ahead of Palmyra in points, but the Panthers held on to the second seed due to their earlier victory over Macon and Friday’s loss by fourth-place Trenton to South Harrison in overtime.
Palmyra will now have a week to heal and prepare their semifinal game at home Nov. 5 against the winner of this Friday’s quarterfinal between Macon and Clark County.
Brookfield will host Trenton in the other quarterfinal with the winner moving on to the semifinals to take on top-seeded Maryville.
Palmyra never got their offense going against Centralia Friday, while the defense kept the team in the hunt into the fourth quarter.

Ryan McKeown gets away from a defender for more yards on a pass play.
The game was a chess match of field position until late in the second quarter, when Centralia put together a five-play, 57-yard drive capped by a 17-yard touchdown pass from quarterback, Beau Gordon, to wide receiver, Mason Barr, who made a diving catch in the back of the end zone.
Centralia’s two-point attempt failed, leaving the score at 6-0.
Centralia looked poised to score again before halftime, when an interception gave them the ball at the Palmyra 39 with 1:06 left. But the Panther defense held strong and forced Centralia to turn the ball over on downs.
Centralia took advantage of a Palmyra fumble in the third quater to score the only other touchdown of the game, when Gordon hooked up with running back, Kyden Wilkerson, on a 54-yard catch and run for a touchdown with 7:49 left.
Palmyra rushed for only 69 yards in the game, while Goodwin completed nine of 17 passes for 104 yards.
Goodwin led the team in rushing with 38 yards on 23 carries. Christian Johnson was the top receiver, catching five passes for 43 yards.
Palmyra held Centralia to just 107 yards on 32 carries, but could not stop the passing attack completely.
Gordon completed just nine of 22 passes for 169 yards, but was picked off twice by Johnson and Ryan McKeown in the process of throwing the two touchdown passes.
Brayden Madden led Palmyra’s defense with 4.5 tackles, including two for losses, while Noah Welty notched four tackles and 1.5 for losses.
Palmyra played without starters quarterback, Colin Arch, wide receiver, Hayes Miller, and defensive back, Carter Crane, who are injured.
The Panthers suffered another blow in the game when starting running back and defensive back, Landyn Smith, went down with an injury in the first half and did not return.
Palmyra ended Clarence Cannon Conference play in a third-place tie with Highland and Macon at 4-5.
Monroe City won the title outright with a 6-1 record, followed by Centralia at 5-2.
