The PHS varsity girls basketball team opened a new season in fine fashion with a 50-17 win at Elsberry Tuesday.
It took a little bit for the offense to click, but a tough defense played a big role in the victory.
“I thought we played a really good all around game against Elsberry,” said Coach Alex Brandenburg. “We started a little slow offensively but the girls played great defense from start to finish.”
Palmyra held Elsberry to two first-half field goals and two free throws, but only led 19-6 at the half.
But, the Lady Panthers came back out in the third quarter to go on a 24-6 run to assure the win.
Clare Williams had an auspicious freshman high school debut, sinking five three pointers en route to a game-high 18 points.
“Clare shot the ball really well for us,” Brandenburg said.
Senior Jansen Juette, back on the court after missing last season due to an injury, scored 10 points, while Candra King helped command the lane with 16 points.
“The inside out game looked really good,” Brandenburg said. “We were able to get the ball to Candra early on for some baskets and it began to open things up for our girls around the perimeter.”
King sank five field goals while drawing fouls and go six of nine from the line.
Palmyra shot well at the charity stripe, sinking 11 of 18 overall.
Also contributing to the offense were Ashley Bode, four points, and Abbey Redd, two.
“It was exciting to see these girls play well,” Brandenburg said,. “They have put a lot of hard work in, and they were really excited to get out and play their first game.”
This week, the Lady Panthers were scheduled to host their first home games, Tuesday, against Mark Twain, and Friday, against Canton.
The second-seeded Lady Panthers will open Monroe City Tournament play next Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. against seventh-seeded Paris.
