The Marion County R-II girls basketball team went into this week’s Monroe City Tournament unbeaten with two more victories to their credit.
The Lady Mustangs (3-0) earned their most lopsided win to date, 60-22, at Bevier, Thursday, controlling the game from the outset.
Olivia Wood and Delaney Straus each sank three field goals to power the team’s 15-7 game opening run, and the six players contributed offensively to a 20-9 run the gave Marion County a commanding 35-16 halftime lead.
Then, a 21-2 run to start the second half gave the Lady Mustangs a 56-18 lead going into the final period.
Three players scored in double figures including Wood, 16, and Halle Keilholz and Madison Stewart who sank four of the team’s three pointers and scored 12 points each.
Also contributing on offense were Straus, eight, Riley Donath, eight, Karissa Kennedy, two, and Grace Jensen-Page, two.
The Lady Mustangs came out of the Thanksgiving break to earn a hard-fought 49-44 win at Community last Tuesday.
Marion County got out to a 7-5 lead and went into halftime up 23-18 before going on a 15-nine run to go into the final quarter up by 11.
Straus sank five field goals and scored 12 points, while Tristen Holt came off the bench to contribute 11 points.
Also scoring were Donath, eight, Stewart, eight, Keilholz, seven, and Wood, three.
The third-seeded Lady Mustangs open the Monroe City Tournament against sixth seeded Mark Twain at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
