After losing the season opener PHS varsity boys basketball team rebounded to go into this week’s Monroe City on the strength of two impressive home wins over Mark Twain and Canton.

Palmyra ended their week with 55-48 victory over Canton Friday.
After an even first quarter that Palmyra won 13-11, the Panthers grabbed the early momentum with a 17-8 run that gave them an 11-point halftime advantage.

Both teams played to a 15-15 draw in the third quarter, and the Panthers managed to hold off Canton, which out-scored Palmyra,
14-10, down the stretch.
Bear Bock led the team’s balanced scoring with 14 points and was followed by Alex Loman, nine, Laydin Lochman, nine, Macon Roberts, eight, Carson Hicks, seven, Tyler Banta, six, Bronson Juette, one, and Jon Lundberg, one.
After struggling to score in their 48-40 season opening at loss at Elsberry before Thanksgiving, the Panther offense broke out in a 72-48 blowout at home over Mark Twain last Tuesday.
In a physical game that included 44 fouls, both teams fought to a virtual draw with Palmyra leading 28-23 at the half.
But, the second half proved to be Palmyra’s all the way as the Panthers went on a 24-9 third-quarter run and then held the Tigers to just four fourth quarter field goals during a 20-10 game ending run.

All 14 Panthers saw floor action with 12 contributing points.
Loman helped Palmyra build its lead by sinking three three-pointers and seven total field goals all in the crucial second and third quarters for a game-high 17 points.
Also breaking into double figures were Roberts with 13 points, and Bock who added 11.
Also scoring were Lochman, seven, Adam Goodwin, seven, Hicks, four, Juette, four, Brayden Shannon, three, Ethan Redd, two, Ryan McKeown, two, and Jimmy Scott, one.
This week, the fourth-seeded Panthers open Monroe City Tournament play at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday against fifth-seeded South Shelby.
