The Marion County R-II girls basketball team opened the new year with three more victories last week that including a comeback thriller.
The Lady Mustangs (9-2) earned the 56-53 comeback victory at home over LaPlata, Thursday.
With her team down by four going into the final period, Halle Keilholz drained three three-pointers in powering a game-winning 13-6 run down the stretch.
LaPlata got out to a 21-18 lead and went into halftime up by one before going on a 17-14 third-quarter run.
Delaney Straus had the hot hand early for Marion County, scoring 16 of her game-high 26 points during the first quarter.
Keilholz ended up sinking a total of four three-pointers for 12 points.
Also contributing on offense were Madison Stewart, eight, Riley Donath, five, Olivia Wood, three, and Tristen Holt, two.
Marion County opened the week with a 64-44 win at Brashear, Tuesday.
Brashear’s Lacey Tisker scored 11 of her 15 points in leading her team to a 19-17 first-quarter lead, only to have Straus responded by scoring 14 of her game-high 19 points during a 22-6 run that gave Marion County a 39-25 halftime lead.
The Lady Mustangs added to their lead by five points in the third quarter to secure the victory.
Keilholz and Donath each sank four three-pointers and scored 13 and 12 points respectively.
Also contributing on offense were Stewart, eight, Wood, seven, Tristen Holt, four, and Riley Holt, one.
Marion County capped the week by cruising to a 70-20 win at home over Novinger, Friday.
Every Lady Mustang contributed to the scoring including Donath, 13, Straus, 12, Riley Holt, 11, Grace Jensen-Page, nine, Keilholz, nine, Karissa Kennedy, five, Tristen Holt, four, Wood, two, Stewart, two, Samantha Kindhart, two, Shayleigh Whetstone, one.
Straus reached a milestone in scoring the 1,000th point of her career.
This week, the Lady Mustangs were scheduled to travel to Wellsville-Middleton, Monday, and host Macon County, Tuesday. Results of the games were not available for this edition.
The following week, they compete in the North Shelby Tournament.
