The Marion County boys basketball team went 1-3 to start the new year last week.
The Mustangs (3-7) eked out their third victory of the season, 52-51, at home over LaPlata, Thursday.
Trailing by three at the half, the Mustangs went on a 16-8 run to start the first half, and had to hold on as LaPlata outscored them, 14-10, down the stretch.
Jackson Stewart, Wyatt Goldinger and Cooper Stotts each had important field goals in the fourth quarter, while Goldinger and Root Cheney were both 2-for-2 from the line during crunch time.
Goldinger led the team with 16 points, while Joey Lagemann sank two three pointers in scoring 14 points.
Stewart hit a trey and scored nine points, while Spencer Whetstone sank two from long-range and finished with seven points.
Cheney ended up with four points and Cooper Stotts, two.
The Mustangs had their biggest offensive output of the season last Tuesday, but it wasn’t enough to top Brashear on the road in a 78-73 defeat.
Marion County scored 19 points in the first quarter alone thanks in part to four of Lagemann’s seven three-pointers in the game, but Brashear scored 26 to take the early lead.
The Mustangs fought back for a 36-36 halftime tie, but their opponents forged ahead in the third quarter and then hung on for the win.
Lagermann scored a game-high 26 points while three other Mustangs scored in double figures including Goldinger, 16, Cooper Stotts 13, and Spencer Whetstone, 12.
Jackson Stewart added five and Cheney, one.
The Mustangs ended the week with a 60-40 loss to Novinger at home Friday.
Novinger jumped out to a 15-3 and lead the rest of the way.
Stewart, Lagemann, and Cheney all scored nine points to lead the offense.
Also contributing were Goldinger, four, Cooper Stotts, four, Caden Stotts, three, and Whetstone, two.
This week, the Mustangs were scheduled to travel to Wellsville-Middleton, Monday, and host Macon County, Tuesday.
The following week, they compete in the North Shelby Tournament.
