The Marion County R-II girls basketball team saw their four game winning streak ended going into district’s with a 58-50 loss at Canton last Tuesday.
The Lady Mustangs (19-5) stayed with the Lady Tigers 16-15 in the first quarter but then suffered through a 29-14 run by Canton that gave the host team a 14-point lead into the final quarter.
And Marion County scored 20 points down the stretch, but could not make up the difference despite Halle Keilholz’s hot shooting hand.
The senior sank four three-pointers in the fourth quarter and ended up scoring a game-high 20 points.
Delaney Straus contributed 17 points, but was held to just one field goal and three total points in the second half.
Also scoring for Marion County were Tristen Holt, seven, Olivia Wood, three, and Madison Stewart, three.
Canton was led by Nariah Clay, 16, and Emma Hultz, 13.
The Lady Mustangs were also supposed to host South Shelby, Friday, but the game was snowed out.
The top-seeded Lady Mustangs were to open Class 1, District 11 play at LaPlata this week at 6 p.m. Tuesday against the winner of Saturday’s quarterfinal between fourth-seeded Atlanta and fifth-seeded Brashear.
