Lady Mustangs’ dream season ends with 65-38 loss to Leeton in state quarterfinals

Marion County earned its way to the Class 1 Quarterfinals against Leeton (District 9) at Truman State University on Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs (24-2) ended the Lady Mustangs season, 65-38.

The Lady Mustangs (21-6) were led by senior Delaney Straus with nine points.
Leeton’s Rowan Schimidli splashed in a three-pointer within 39 seconds into the game. Marion County’s Madison Stewart answered with a shot from beyond the arc. The game was tied 3-3.
The Lady Bulldogs scored the next five points extending its lead. Straus added two to the board for Marion County. Schimidli claimed the next six points with three-pointers.
Marion County’s Olivia Wood went 2-for-2 from the free throw line. Leeton led 14-7 with 3:21 on the clock. Ending the quarter, the Lady Bulldogs added five more points to the board.
Beginning the second period, the Lady Bulldogs quickly scored four points. Stewart scored with six minutes on the clock. The Lady Mustangs trailed 26-9 after Leeton’s Hailey Bingaman hit a three-pointer.
Wood went 2-for-2 from the line. Straus scored next for Marion County. The Lady Mustangs didn’t score again until 1:26 on the clock, and Straus claimed a point from the line. Going into the half, the Lady Bulldogs had a 31-16 advantage.
In the third quarter, Marion County was out-scored 14-7. Straus hit a bucket with 3:08 on the clock. Stewart hit a three-pointer with 2:22 left in the period.
Marion County’s Tristen Holt claimed the last bucket in the quarter. Leeton still held the lead, 45-23.
Marion County scored 15 points in the final quarter. Marion County’s Halle Keilholz scored two three-pointers.
Riley Donath claimed five while Straus and Holt each scored a bucket.
The Lady Bulldogs tallied 20.
