The PHS varsity baseball team helped their coach reach a milestone with an 11-1 home win over Highland Saturday evening.
The victory not only completed the Panthers’ effort to reach the .500 mark it represented Coach Mark Loman his 300th career coaching victory.
Despite the day providing the best weather this season, Loman still got wet as his players gave him a post-game water cooler shower.
The Panthers (9-9-1) took all the drama out of the contest by scoring a run in the first and four more in the
second, while getting solid pitching from their starter, Adam Goodwin.
Palmyra added two more runs in the fourth before the Cougars finally got on the scoreboard with their lone run in the fifth.
Goodwin then had the honor of ending the game with a walk-off single to cap a four-run, game-ending rally in the fifth.
Palmyra out-hit Highland 11-4 with Goodwin going 4-for-4 and Rayce Ragar, 3-for-4, leading the way.
Goodwin pitched four and a third innings to earn the mound victory before giving way to Alex Loman, who got the last out.
The Panthers are 6-1 in conference play with one more contest, a rain-out makeup contest at home against South Shelby, Monday. Results were not available
in time for this issue.
The Panthers scored seven runs in the fourth inning to blast open a lead that resulted in an 11-7 win at home over Liberty, Ill. last Monday.
Leading 3-2 at the time the big rally provided some needed breathing room as Liberty came back with four runs in the fifth and one in the seventh to make it closer.
Ethan Tallman opened the inning with a triple and was followed by singles from Nolyn Richards, Landyn Smith, Adam Goodwin, Alex Loman and Brayden Shannon and a double by Colby Cook.
The Panthers out-hit their opponents 15-10, with Smith, Goodwin, Loman and Talllman all having two-hit games.
Hunter Wilson started on the mound and went 4.1 innings before being relieved by Smith.
Palmyra ends the regular season at home Thursday with a rainout makeup against Hannibal.
The Panthers will compete as the top seed in the Class 3, District 6 Tournament at Shelbina next week (see other story).
