The PHS girls golf season is under way with a new coach at the helm.
Cody Ash takes over with hopes of continuing the program’s success in sending athletes to the state tournament.
“I am blessed to get this opportunity and take over the girls golf program here in Palmyra,” Ash said. “I have had experience in coaching golf and it has been fun so far.”
Ash has been coaching athletics for 10 years including two seasons as a golf coach, but mostly as a basketball coach, including a year and a half as a head coach in Canton, Mo.
Ash has a roster of eight golfers including Mallory Sublette and Ella Goldinger, who competed at the state tournament as juniors.
Also returning are seniors Kylie Begley and Kaylee Warning and juniors Haylie Begley and Ava Weiman.
New to the program are Candra King, a junior, and Tegan Herold, a freshman.
“I like the core group of this roster,” Ash said. “We are very capable of posting four good scores at any time. I look forward to watching them compete and see what they do.”
As a coach, Ash said he wants to bring a cerebral approach to the game.
“Smart golf is good golf,” Ash said, noting it involves trying to “post the lowest score by any means necessary.”
He also said the short game is key.
“It’s an area in the game, especially in high school, that is overlooked. Get the ball on the green and at minimum two putt is our goal.”
The team opened the season this past Friday on the road against Capital City and Father Tolton Regional Catholic.
They are competing in Class 2, District 2 along with Blair Oaks, California, Centralia, Eldon, Fulton, Hallsville, Kirksville, Macon, Mexico, Moberly, Osage, Southern Boone and Versailles.
