The PHS varsity football team was in the game for the first three quarters Friday, before Centralia got its big-play offense going to hand Palmyra a third-straight road loss to start the season, 35-0.
Palmyra trailed 7-0 at halftime and 14-0 going into the fourth quarter when Centralia struck hard with two long touchdowns to go up 28-0 by the midpoint of the fourth quarter.
Meanwhile, the Palmyra offense was able to collect some yardage, but were unable to continue drives to avoid the shutout.
Centralia didn’t score until the 5:25 mark of the second quarter when Kyden Wilkerson broke free for a 28-yard touchdown run. Nathan Timpe then kicked the first of his five extra-point attempts to put his team up 7-0.
It stayed a one-score lead until the 1:25 mark of the third quarter when Centralia quarterback, Cullen Bennett connected with Ethan Adams for a 24-yard scoring pass to go up 14-0.
Centralia then put the game out of sight when Wilkerson broke open for a 71-yard touchdown run and Bennett completed a 72-touchdown pass and run to Jesse Caballero to go up 28-0.
A late touchdown run completed the scoring.
Meanwhile, the Palmyra offense moved the ball, but could not sustain their possessions.
Palmyra collected a respectible 234 yards of total offense on 58 plays, including 189 yards rushing and 45 through the air.
But the Panthers, who did not give up a single turnover, converted only five of 15 third down plays and fell short on four fourth-down attempts.
Ashton Hankins led the offense with 104 rushing yards on 19 attempts, while Aaron Ritchey contributed 56 yards on 20 carries.
Marty Smyer III completed three passes for 45 yards, with Ryan McKeown catching two for 41 yards.
Centralia converted eight of 11 third-down attempts while collecting 361 yards of offense, including 237 rushing and 124 passing.
Wilkerson rushed for 120 yards on 11 carries, while Bennett completed five of 11 passes for 124 yards.
Home sweet home
Palmyra will finally host their first home game of the season and it is, appropriate enough, the homecoming game, Friday.
But, the Panthers will have to take on a 3-0 Macon team that is coming off a 26-18 win over Clark County Friday.
The Tigers other victories came against Kirksville, 27-14, and North Callaway, 33-0.
