Monroe City got all the points they needed on the game’s first play from scrimmage in beating Palmyra, 50-0, and retain the Mayor’s Cup Friday.
Monroe City received the opening kickoff and immediately found the end zone when quarterback Reece Buhlig rolled to his right and lofted a long pass down the middle of the field to a wide open Jaylyn Countryman, who caught it and ran unhindered for the score.

Palmyra would slow Monroe City some in the first quarter, but the Class 1 state top ranked team would go on to score six more unanswered touchdowns to crown their shutout.
Palmyra reached Monroe territory on its first possession, reaching the 34 yard-line before failing to convert on fourth down.
The Panthers would then force a fumble and recover the ball on the Monroe 30, only to turn the ball back over on an interception.
Monroe City would not be stopped for the rest of the half, scoring touchdowns on the next four possessions in building an insurmountable 36-0 halftime lead.
With a continuous clock the rest of the game, Monroe City would add two fourth quarter touchdowns before time expired.
Monroe City accumulated 346 offensive yards, including 242 on the ground.
The ball was spread around with Waylon DeGrave rushing for 94 yards and three touchdowns on 10 carries, while Ceaton Pennewell added 78 yards and one touchdown on 12 carries.
Buhlig completed three of 10 passes for 104 yards and the opening touchdown.
Palmyra’s offense was all but grounded for just 100 yards, including just 57 on the ground. Monroe City held Palmyra to just six first downs and just one out of 10 third-down conversions, and one of three on fourth down.
Ashton Hankins was Palmyra’s leading rusher with 23 yards on eight carries.
Marty Smyser III completed five of 10 passes for 39 yards and one interception.
Hankins and Ethan Redd had two receptions each.
Palmyra stays at home this Friday to face a 3-3 Clark County team that is coming off of a 28-18 loss to Centralia.
