The PHS varsity softball team saw its season come to an end with a 13-2 loss to Fulton in the Class 3, District 3 semifinals at Orchard Farm High School Thursday.
The fifth seeded Lady Panthers (12-16) were hoping to upset the top-seeded team in the district. But the Hornets scored four runs in the first and another in the second while shutting out Palmyra through the first three innings to take control of the game.
The two teams tied with five hits, but Palmyra committed seven fielding errors and issued five walks to help Fulton pile up runs and end the game with four runs in the fifth.
The Hornets also hit three home runs off starter, Kennedy Wilson, who gave up seven earned runs while striking out six.
Abbey Redd went two for two with two doubles to lead Palmyra’s offense.
Fulton advanced to the championship game Saturday, but was upset by third-seeded Bowling Green, 3-1.
Bowling Green (22-9) advanced to the Class 3 quarterfinals this Thursday and will play Father Tolton Regional Catholic (25-11).
The winner moves on the semifinals Oct. 28 and will play the winner of Thursday’s quarterfinal between Oak Grove and Chillicothe.
Palmyra advanced to the district semifinals with a 5-2 upset win over fourth-seeded Winfield Tuesday at St. Charles Community College.
The victory came on the strength of a tie-breaking three-run rally in the third and the dominant pitching of Kennedy Wilson.
Abbey Redd led off the game with a walk, stole second and scored on Lexi Peuster’s single to center.
The Warriors responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning, but the Lady Panthers took a strong advantage with three runs in the third which started when Redd led off again, this time with a double to the fence in right field.
Tenlee Voss followed with an RBI double and then scored on a second straight single by Peuster, who later scored on a double by Hailey Kroeger.
Winfield scored a run in the third, but it would be the last as Wilson held the Warriors hitless the rest of the way.
Wilson gave up just one hit, a first-inning single and only one earned run while striking out 13 and walking just one.
Palmyra ended the regular season last Monday with a 10-0 win at Hannibal.
The Lady Panthers scored four runs in the first, five in the second and one more in the fourth that shortened the game to five innings.
Kennedy Wilson pitched a two-hitter striking out seven with two walks.
She also led the team’s nine-hit attack by going 2-for-3 with a home run, double, two runs scored and two driven in.
Tenlee Voss went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBI.
