Palmyra falls to South Shelby, 31-6

The PHS varsity football team ended the regular season with a 31-6 loss at home to South Shelby Friday.
The Panthers (1-8, 1-6 CCC will now move on to the Class 2, District 7 Tournament and play as the sixth seed at third-seeded Hallsville this Friday.

Palmyra had opportunities early on to make a game of it against South Shelby and even take the game scoreless into halftime only to have turnover help South Shelby escape into to the second half with a 14-0 lead.
A fumble ended Palmyra’s intitial drive after taking the opening kickoff, but the Panther defense stepped up to halt the ensuing Cardinal drive on downs at the Palmyra 27.
Palmyra reached the South Shelby 33 on the next possession and missed a chance to take the early lead when Trey Smyser pass went through the receiver’s hands while approaching the end zone.
Palmyra’s defense came through in a big way again, this time stopping the Cardinals on downs at the Panther two with 3:58 left in the half.
However, Palmyra promptly fumbled the ball away at the one. And, this time South Shelby took advantage when quarterback Trey Countryman hit Kendall Hammond with a two-yard scoring strike on third down. Johnny Cleaton’s extra point kick gave South Shelby a 7-0 lead at the 1:45 mark.
South Shelby then flipped the script by converting an onside kick at taking over on the Palmyra 31 with 1:40 left.
Hammond broke a 23-yard run to the Palmyra eight, from where Cunningham hit Cameron Wiseman for a scoring strike that put the Cardinals up 14-0 with 1:11 left in the half.
South Shelby added two-more touchdowns in the third quarter to go up 28-0 as Hammond ran for scores from 56 and nine yards out.
Palmyra finally got on the scoreboard on an 11-yard touchdown run by Ashton Hankins with 11:08 left in the fourth quarter.
Cleaton then showed off his kicking foot again by booting a 24-yard field goal with 3:18 left.
South Shelby out-gained Palmyra 302 yards to 204, getting most of it on the ground with 262 yards. Hammond led the way with 202 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries.
Countryman completed six of 11 passes for 40 yards and two touchdowns.
Ryan McKeown led Palmyra’s 192-yard rushing attack with 55 yards on five carries, while Smyser carried the ball 14 times for 46 yards. Hankins ended up with 43 yards on five carries.
Smyser completed two of five passes without an interception for 12 yards.
Ethan Redd caught one for 13 yards while the other pass went for minus-one yard.
Jose Juarez led the defense with 7.5 tackles and a sack, while Hankins collected six tackles.
Parker Bier was credited with an interception, South Shelby’s only turnover.
Monroe City ended up winning an undefeated Clarence Cannon Championship with their 50-0 win over Clark County Friday.
The Panthers will travel to Hallsville Friday for one of two Class 2, District 7 quarterfinal games.
The winner will advance to the semifinals and take second-seeded Centralia the following week.
Fourth-seeded Clark County will host fifth-seeded Montgomery County in the other quarterfinal, with the winner advancing and taking on top-seeded Bowling Green, the following week.
Palmyra lost at Hallsville, 58-20, in the season opener Sept. 26.
But Hallsville has gone 3-5 against mostly tough competition since then. This past Friday, the Indians fell to California, 41-38.
Hallsville’s other losses have come against Blair Oaks, Osage, Boonville and Centralia.
The Indians other victories came against Southern Boone, Eldon and Versailes.
