Lady Panther title game upset bid falls short against South Shelby

The PHS varsity girls basketball team could not unseat the defending district champions Saturday, ending their season with a 58-46 loss to South Shelby in the Class 3, District 6 championship game in Monroe City Saturday.
The Lady Panthers fought hard all the way, and even got out to a promising 13-8 start, but the Lady Birds fired up their fan following with a 23-7 second-quarter run.

Palmyra tried to make a second half run but could only match South Shelby, 27-27, the rest of the way.
South Shelby advanced to sectional action Tuesday and were to play Duchesne in Hannibal.
Sydney Compton led Palmyra’s offense, hitting four three-pointers, and seven total field goals along with both free throws for 20 points.
Also scoring were Candra King, nine, Abbey Redd, seven, Clare Williams, four, Ashley Bode, four and Taytum White, two.
The Lady Panthers advanced to the title game with a 55-41 come-from-behind win over third-seeded Monroe City, Thursday.
The host team came out strong and built a quick 11-2 lead that fired up the home fans.
However, Palmyra started fighting their way back into the game and trailed by just three-going into the second quarter and then taking a two-point lead just before the half when Bode came off the bench and drilled a three-pointer to the delight of the Lady Panther fans.
The game remained close until the final quarter when Palmyra pulled away with an 18-7 run.
The game-sealing rally was fueled by Redd, who hit two treys and scored eight points and King, who sank two field goals and thee of four free throws down the stretch.
Compton led the team with 18 points on five field goals, including a three-pointer, and seven of nine from the line. She also pulled down five rebounds and collected three steals.
Redd finished with 14 points, two steals and two rebounds while added King, 12 points, to go along with a team-high nine rebounds and a blocked shot.
Also scoring were White, five, Bode, three, and Williams, three.
