Mustangs upset Bevier in district baseball opener

The Marion County R-II baseball team advanced to the Class 3, District 13 semifinals with 5-1 upset win over Bevier Friday in LaPlata.
The sixth-seeded Mustangs (5-13) scored single runs in the first three innings and added two insurance runs in the fifth while holding third-seeded Bevier to a first-inning run.
The Mustangs were to take on second-seeded North Shelby Monday, but results were unavailable in time for this issue.
The winner was to advance to the championship game scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday in LaPlata.
North Shelby advanced to the semifinals with a 5-4 win over seventh-seeded Macon County.
On the other side of the bracket, fourth-seeded Atlanta downed fifth-seeded Brashear to advance to a semifinal showdown with top-seeded LaPlata which received a first-round bye.
Joey Lagemann threw a two-hitter, striking out 10 and walking none while giving up an unearned run.
Jackson Stewart scored the team’s first-inning run by singling, stealing second, moving to third on Root Cheney’s infield single and stealing home.
Porter Britt led off the second with a double, moved to third on a grounder and scored on a passed ball.
In the third Stewart reached second on a two-base error, stole third, and scored on another Bevier error.
A double by Stewart and singles by Nick Kelso, Nathan Wright and Paden Olson produced Marion County’s two runs in the fifth.
The Mustangs lost their regular season finale, 9-6 at home to Missouri Military Academy, May 8.
MMA scored the game’s initial run in the top of the first and added another in the third, before the Mustangs tied it in the bottom of the inning.
Marion County scored two in the fourth and one in the fifth to lead 5-2 before MMA scored seven in the sixth to gain ultimate advantage.
Only one of MMA’s nine runs were earned as the Mustangs committed four errors.
Lagemann, Root Cheney and Jackson Stewart shared the pitching duties.
Lagemann led the team’s six-hit attack by going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Cheney and Stewart both contributed doubles.
