Joyce Susannah Meyer

Joyce Susannah Meyer, 57, Palmyra, Mo., passed away at 5:28 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2023, at her home in Palmyra.

Joyce was born Nov. 7, 1965, in Hannibal, Mo., to George W. and Wanda S. Hays Smith. She was married to Ronnie K. Meyer on May 19, 1991, at Providence Baptist Church in Withers Mill, Mo. He preceded her death on Jan. 11, 2022.

Survivors include her daughter, April Hess (J.R.), and special son, Jarrod Spurgeon and family; grandchildren, Serenity Forbes, Jacolby Hess, Amora Hess, and Nolan, Lincoln and Leo Bauman; brothers, Randy Smith (Mona), Hannibal, Mo.; and Dale Smith (Kristy), Foster, Mo.; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Byron Smith; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bill and Louise Miller.

 Joyce worked for many years as a clerk at the Shell station in Palmyra, where she was known and loved by many members of the community. She was quick to give a smile and wave to everyone as they came in for their morning coffee or soda. 

Joyce and Ronnie were always together around town and could often be found tailgating with friends at local football games, fishing or bowling. She enjoyed making up batches of deer summer sausage or deer jerky to share with friends and was known for the delicious butter mints that she would make for weddings and other events. 

She looked forward to the Christian retreats in Virginia that members of Cornerstone took together. As she slowed down a bit over the last few years, Joyce was often on the front porch of her house on Main St., watching her grandchildren play or her little dogs run around the yard. 

When she talked about her grandkids, it was always with a smile on her face and love in her heart.

Joyce attended both Cornerstone Church of Marion in Palmyra, and Grace Point Church in Hannibal.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Aug. 21, at Cornerstone Church of Marion. Pastor Marty Smyser will officiate. Burial will be at Providence Baptist Cemetery in Withers Mill.

Pallbearers will be Justin Smith, Kris Kincaid, Dillon Smith, Jarrod Spurgeon and Matthew Smith.

Friends and family are invited to Joyce’s Life Celebration at a visitation that will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service on Monday, at Cornerstone Church of Marion.

Memorials may be made to Providence Baptist Cemetery.
