Mary Alyce Plunkett

Mary Alyce Plunkett, 91, Philadelphia, Mo., passed away at 5 a.m., Friday, Aug. 18, 2023, at  Salt River Community Care in Shelbina, Mo.

Mary Alyce was born April 4, 1932, in Nelsonville, Mo., to Nobel and Neola Pugh Steffen. She was married to Clarence Plunkett on Oct. 3, 1948 in Nelsonville. He preceded her in death on Nov. 19, 2009.

Survivors include her children,  Gaye Lyn Spratt (Brent), Emden, Mo.;  Rustyn (Rusty) Layne Plunkett (Heather Spratt), Columbia, Mo.; and Lissa Jo Berry (Ray), Bethel, Mo.; daughter-in-law, Rhonda Plunkett, Philadelphia; grandchildren, Jason Plunkett (Wendy), Justyn Plunkett (Camille), Lindsey Spratt, Tyler Spratt (Tiereney), Dusty Berry (Courtney), Dustin Berry (Sarah), Brandi Balsamo (Beck),  Randi Lyn Minear (Nathan), Jesse Spratt Plunkett and Emma Spratt Plunkett; 21 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sons, Robbie Plunkett and Randy Plunkett; brother, John Robert (Bobby) Steffen; and sister, Marjorie E. Plunkett.

Mary Alyce was a sweet woman who loved her family unconditionally and enjoyed seeing them whenever they stopped in. She loved her home and decorating it for all the holidays. She had a talent for flower arranging and enjoyed making beautiful bouquets and displaying them on her dining room table. She also loved canning produce from the garden. 

In the fall Mary Alyce loved to carve her pumpkins and have a wiener roast. At Christmas she enjoyed making Martha Washington candy for her guests and was so happy to see everyone. She enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s sporting events. 

Mary Alyce loved her cats and there was always one close by. Her last one was named Fezziwig from a favorite book, Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol. Reading many classics and her Bible was a favorite pastime. She also enjoyed volunteering at the Philadelphia Community Center.

Mary Alyce was a long time member of Nelsonville Baptist Church. She loved Jesus and her church family at Nelsonville.

A funeral service will begin at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 22, at the church. Pastor Kenneth Clair will officiate. Burial will follow at Steffenville Cemetery in Steffenville, Mo.

Pallbearers will be Jason Plunkett, Justyn Plunkett, Dustin Berry, Tyler Spratt, Dusty Berry and Jesse Spratt Plunkett.

Honorary pallbearers will be Reed Plunkett, Isaac Berry, Peyton Plunkett, Quade Plunkett, Cutter Spratt, Catcher Spratt, Carson Berry, Rylan McQuay, Lane Berry, Brantley Berry, Connor Berry, August Berry, Rhett Minear, Ragar Plunkett and Colt Minear.

Friends and family are invited to Mary Alyce’s Life Celebration and visitation that will be held from 9 a.m until the time of service on Tuesday at Nelsonville Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made to Nelsonville Baptist Church or Steffenville Cemetery.
