Mary Ruth Scholl

Mary Ruth Scholl, 92, Hannibal, Mo., passed away at 9:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 28, 2023, at Luther Manor Nursing Center in Hannibal.

Mary was born Oct. 9, 1930, in Higbee, Mo., to Manuel and Margaret Webb Daiprai. She was married to Joe B. Scholl in New London, Mo., March 3, 1949,  and her former husband predeceased her in 1990. 

Survivors include her children, Mary Jo Voepel, Palmyra, Mo.; John Boone Scholl (Mary), Springfield, Mo.; Terri Rosenkrans, Hannibal; Penny Person (Jimmy), Hannibal; and Kevin Lee Scholl (Sheila), Palmyra; 19 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Caroline Diaprai; two brothers, Floyd Whitaker and Charles “Muggs” Whitaker; daughter, Sheryl Tallman, and son-in-law. Raymond; son-in-law, Rich Rosenkrans; son-in-law, Ron Voepel Jr., grandson, Jerrud Tallman; and granddaughter, Dana Haynes.

Mary was a hard-working woman; she had an amazing work ethic that often kept her working two jobs at a time. During her career she worked for Crown Shoe Factory and then later at American Safety before moving on to restaurant work. 

She surrounded herself with loved ones and could most often be found enjoying bingo and her grandkids’ sporting events with the rest of the family. 

During the holidays she made the best oyster dressing, and the family often requested her green bean casserole be brought along.

Mary was a proud supporter of the Palmyra Panthers and the St. Louis Cardinals. At home she took comfort in watching her favorite TV shows, Jeopardy and the Price is Right. Mary liked to find time to go bowling with family and friends and was the proud owner of a beautiful collection of elephants.

Mary was Baptist by faith.

The family will hold a memorial on Saturday, Oct. 14, at the American Legion in Palmyra.

Funeral arrangements and services are under the direction of Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra.
