The PHS softball varsity softball team advanced to the district semifinals last Thursday with a wild 16-14 win over sixth-seeded Orchard Farm in a game which started with both teams scoring 11 runs in the first inning.
Palmyra (8-15) was to take on second-seeded Wright City in the semifinals Monday. Results were not available for this issue.
Playing as the home team, Thursday, Palmyra took a two-run lead in the bottom of the second only to have the Eagles go up by one with two in the third and one in the fifth.
Palmyra regained the lead for good with two in the fifth and one in the sixth before shutting down Orchard Farm in the top of the seventh for the victory.
The Eagles looked like they would send the Lady Panthers home for the season when they scored 11 runs, only two of which were earned, in the top of the first taking advantage of three Palmyra fielding errors while collecting three walks and five hits including two home runs.
But, Palmyra answered Orchard Farm in kind scoring 11 runs on five walks, a hit batter and four base hits.
A lead-off double by Marney Plunkett followed by a single by Arizona Mitchell, who later stole second, moved to third on a ground out and scored on Alaina Loman’s single accounted for Palmrya’s two-run second.
Palmyra took the lead in the fifth on a lead-off single by Lexi Peuster, a double by Hailey Kroeger and a single by Jerzey Ramey.
Palmyra scored the sixth-inning run a lead-off single by Bella McBride who advanced to second on an error and later scored on Kroeger’s two-out single.
Mitchell started on the mound, but lasted only two-thirds of an inning before being relieved by Plunkett, who went the final six-and-a-third innings, giving up three runs, one of which was earned on three hits and a walk, while striking out six.
Wright City advanced to the semifinals with a 15-0 win over seventh-seeded STEAM Academy, Thursday.
Also winning quarterfinal games and advancing to the semifinals were top-seeded Winfield, 16-0, over St. Charles West, and Lutheran St. Charles, 22-1, over Jennings.
The Class 3, District 3 championship game was to be played at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
The winner will advance to sectionals, Saturday, Oct. 21, and take on the winner of the District 4 championship game this past Monday between Hallsville and Fulton.
The Lady Panthers went into the district tournament on the strength of a 14-4 win at home over Hannibal in the regular season finale, Monday.
Palmyra scored five runs in the first, added four in the third and fourth and walked off the win on Peuster’s lead-off home run in the sixth.
Peuster went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and three driven in.
Kroeger went 2-for-3 with two doubles, a run scored and three RBI, while Bella McBride went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and two RBI.
Mitchell pitched a complete game, giving up four earned runs on nine hits and two walks.
The victory ended Palmyra’s six-game losing streak.
JV ends season
The junior varsity squad ended the season with a 4-2 loss at home to Hannibal last Monday.
Aubrey Hillman tied the game at one with a home run in the bottom of the first inning.
Hannibal took the lead with two runs in the third and one in the fourth, before Palmyra scored one in the fifth and final inning.
Palmyra ended the season with a 1-12 record.
