The PHS varsity football team scored early and often while shutting down the opposition, with some help from Highland miscues, to notch a 44-0 win on the home field Friday.
The victory pushed the Panthers (2-6 overall, 2-4 CCC) into sixth place in the conference and fifth place in the Class 2, District 7 standings heading into this Friday’s regular season finale.

Peirce White (5) and Rylan Compton (42) celebrate after Compton scores the Panthers’ first touchdown against Highland Friday.
Three Cougar fumbles helped the Panthers hog the football for all but about five minutes of the first half in building a 22-0 lead at the break.
Palmyra took the opening kickoff and rammed the ball down the field before scoring on a three-yard run on Rylan Compton’s quarterback keeper.
The Cougars then fumbled the ball on their second play from scrimmage, and the Panthers took advantage with a six-play drive capped by a 19-yard touchdown pass from Compton to Wyatt Augspurg.
And, just less than seven minutes into the game, the Panthers had a 12-0 lead.
More help came from the Cougars on their next drive when they were pinned on their own two-yard line facing fourth and 10, and forced to punt.
The hike from center went high for the punter who went up to catch it, but came down with his back foot out of bounds, giving Palmyra a safety and a 14-0 lead at the 8:28 mark of the second quarter.

Palmyra’s Aaron Ritchey gets snagged by a Highland defender Friday.
Palmyra capitalized on another Highland fumble to score one more time in the first half on a 36-yard touchdown run by Aaron Ritchey,
who also ran in the two-pointer to give Palmyra a 22-0 lead.
Ritchey added a 45-yard touchdown run and two-pointer to open the second half for a 30-0 lead.
And the Panthers added two more touchdowns to complete the scoring.
Palmyra gained 200 yards on offense in the first half compared to 14 yards for Highland.

A win for the Cardinals will give them an undefeated conference title.
