Mary Elliott

Mary Elliott, 89, Palmyra, Mo., passed away at 8:25 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 26, 2023, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill.

Mary was born May 14, 1934, in rural Marion County, Mo., to John and Retta Curless Frazer. She was married to Dallas Edward Elliott on Feb. 1, 1952, in her parents’ home near Monroe City, Mo. He preceded her in death on June 5, 2020.

Survivors include one son, Mark Elliott (Wendy), Wilmington, N.C. and two grandchildren, Abbey Hunt (Byron), New York City, N.Y., and Lilly Zenor (Alex), Ashburn, Va.; great-grandchildren, Rey Leona Hunt and Ezekiel Mackenzie Zenor; sister, Edna Lucke; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews who she cherished.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents and husband and love of her life, Dallas Elliott.

Mary attended Mt. Vernon and White Franklin schools and graduated from Monroe City High School. 

She began her career working for International Shoe Company in Hannibal, Mo. before working as an administrative assistant with the MU Extension office. Later she worked as a bookkeeper at Lucke Plumbing Supply in Palmyra, and retired as a deputy tax collector for Marion County, Mo. 

She was always a happy and outgoing lady, striving to help anyone in need. Her hospitality was for everyone, eager to volunteer for the Maple Lawn Auxiliary or the many Christian Marriage Encounters she and Dallas enjoyed. She was an active member of the Marion Mothers Club. 

At home, Mary enjoyed gardening, canning and making bread for family and friends. She completed many beautiful knitting projects with love and care, and every year at Christmas nieces, nephews, grandchildren and children from the neighborhood enjoyed coming to her home to make Christmas cookies. 

Mary enjoyed camping and traveling, which for many years meant an annual trip with family and friends to the mountains of Colorado.

Mary was a member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church and former member of Zion Lutheran Church.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 2, at Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra. Pastors Homer Poor and Dewayne Larenson will officiate. Burial will follow at Mt. Vernon Cemetery near Monroe City.

Pallbearers will be John Lucke, Robert Lucke, Nik Yager, Danny Elliott, Bill Elliott and Adam Grove.

Friends and family are invited to Mary ‘s Life Celebration at a visitation that will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 1, at Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel.

Memorials may be made to Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church or Maple Lawn Auxiliary.
