Panthers’ season ends with 14-0 loss to Clark County in district quarterfinals

Turnovers and a struggling offense, led to a 14-0 season- ending loss for Palmyra at Clark County in the district football quarterfinals Friday.
The Panther defense kept Palmyra in it throughout the game and trailed 7-0 at the half, but four turnovers thwarted any opportunities to score while the Indians found the end zone one more time late in the quarter to complete the scoring.
Fifth-seeded Palmyra ends the season 2-8, while fourth-seeded Clark County advances to the Class 2, District 7 semifinals to play top-seeded South Shelby, which earned a first-round bye.

Falling temperatures in the low 40s and wind made for chilly playing conditions, and both teams struggled to put together sustained drives.

The Indians moved the ball into Palmyra territory and looked primed to score when the Panthers’ Wyatt Augspurg forced a fumble and the ball was recovered on the Palmyra three-yard line.
Palmyra was unable to move the ball, but chose to go for it on fourth and short, and failed to get the ball across the line of gain, giving the ball back to Clark County on the Palmyra 13.
The Panther defense stepped up again, this time stopping the Indians on downs at the Palmyra four.

The Panthers were soon forced to punt from their own 15 and Clark County started their next drive on the Palmyra 44.
Clark County scored five plays later on 28-yard touchdown run by Conner Westcamp to go up 7-0 at the 4:53 mark of the second quarter.
The Panthers reached the 50-yard-line on their next drive but were forced to punt just before the half.
Four of the first five Palmyra possessions ending with turnovers, prevented any chance of getting on the scoreboard.
A fumble on their own 14, set up Clark County’s last touchdown on an eight-yard run by Callen Wheeler with 2:59 left in the third quarter.
The Panthers had two more possessions, but punted from their own 47 on the first one, with an interception ending the other.
In the other District 7 games, second-seeded Bowling Green blanked seventh-seeded Mark Twain, 54-6, and third-seeded Monroe City shutout sixth-seeded Highland, 34-0.
Monroe City will travel to Bowling Green in this Friday’s other semifinal game.
