The Marion County R-II boys basketball team won the consolation final of the Monroe City Tournament Friday, 54-42, over seventh-seeded Highland.
Game statistics were not made available in time for this issue.
The eighth-seeded Mustangs (6-1) advanced to the consolation final with a 55-43 upset win over fifth-seeded Mark Twain Wednesday.
Trailing by three going into the second quarter, the Mustangs went on a 14-4 run to lead by seven at the half.
They then out-scored the Tigers 30-25 the rest of the way.
Wyatt Goldinger scored eight of his team-high 20 points during the second-quarter run
He sank four field goals, including a three-pointer, while making 11 of 18 free throws for the game.
Caden Stotts hit three of his four three pointers in the first half and finished with 12 points.
Also contributing on offense were Jackson Stewart, 10, Porter Britt, eight, and Mason Wood, five.
Mark Twain was led by Sam Northcutt’s 20-point effort.
The Mustangs suffered their first loss of the season Monday when they fell to top-seeded Palmyra, 55-32.
Palmyra jumped out to an 18-5 lead and led by 18 at halftime.
Scoring for Marion County were Goldinger, 13, Britt, 10, Joey Lagemann, five, Dylan Stephens, three, and Stewart, one.
This week, the Mustangs were scheduled to host North Missouri Home School Association, Monday, and Scotland County, Friday.
They finish the 2023 portion of their schedule by hosting LaPlata Dec. 18
