Darlene von Thun

Darlene von Thun, 78, Palmyra, Mo., went to her eternal rest at 10:45 a.m., Sunday, Dec. 17, 2023, at her home in Palmyra, Mo.

Darlene was born Feb. 9, 1945, in Berwick, Ill., to Rufus Miller and Mary LaVaughn Briggs Miller. She was married to Barry von Thun on March 21, 1965, in Shelbyville, Mo.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Barry von Thun, Palmyra; children, Carl Raymond von Thun, Hannibal, Mo.; Lee Edward von Thun, Palmyra; special daughter, Amanda Redmon; brother, Samuel Miller (Joan), Riverside, Fla.; sister, Eva Fae Livers, Shelbina, Mo.; grandchildren, Austin von Thun, Kaitlyn Nichelson, and Seth Coulson; brothers-in-law, Steve von Thun (Linda), Shelbyville; and Roger von Thun (Diane), Shelbyville; numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Clifford Miller, Arlene Davis, Betty Hartsock, Charlie Miller, infant siblings, Mary Louise and Nina, Bonnie Broughton, Danny Miller, Rueben Miller, Larry Miller and Julie Stevens.

Professionally Darlene worked in Logistics Operation for the Harris Company in Quincy, Ill. for many years.

She loved the adventures of traveling in a caravan with friends and family, visiting such beautiful places as the Garden of the Gods and Pike’s Peak in Colorado; Wyoming, South Dakota, Niagara Falls, and Washington, D.C. 

She was a great cook and enjoyed making and decorating cakes for any occasion. Her many talents included working with ceramics and working on Artex painting on cloth. 

As a woman raised in a very large family, she learned early on the value and skills needed to work in the garden and canning veggies for the coming year. Over the years Darlene collected Precious Moments figurines, liked to watch her daily soap and Wheel of Fortune on T.V. 

Darlene was a wonderful wife, loving mother and grandmother. She kept her focus on her family, often in the crowd at their sporting events and school functions to show her love and support.

Darlene attended Mission Hill Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 27, at Mission Hill Baptist Church. Pastor Kent Lewis will officiate. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Lutheran Cemetery in Shelbyville.

Pallbearers will be Troy von Thun, Travis von Thun, Tim von Thun, Lonnie von Thun, Colton von Thun and Austin von Thun.

Honorary pallbearers will be Kaitlyn Nichelson and Seth Coulson.

Friends and family are invited to Darlene’s Life Celebration at a visitation that will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 26, at Mission Hill Baptist Church in Palmyra.

Memorials may be made to Neighbors helping Neighbors in Shelby County or Mission Hill Baptist Church.
