Marcia Buckwalter Fohey was raised in Palmyra and graduated from Palmyra High School. She attended Hannibal-Lagrange University and Quincy University, graduating from Northeast Missouri State University, now known as Truman State University.
Marcia is retired from teaching English/ Language Arts, Spanish, physical education, and various other subjects as needed. She is the mother of four children: Derek (Joelle) Fohey, Dax (Kelli) Fohey, Davin Fohey, and Danika (Trevor) Spratt. She is a proud grandmother of 10: Drake, Delanie, Hailey, Taylor, Jaxson, Dailyn, Danae, Devyn, Dannah, and Dylan. She also has two great-granddaughters, Charlotte and Ella.
Retirement has allowed Marcia to
devote more time to her family, church, and the American Legion Auxiliary. When there was no veterans program in Marion County, she organized a group and proudly watched it grow over the years. Currently, she serves as Vice President of the Auxiliary, Poppy chairman, a member of the Scholarship Committee, chairman of the Veterans Bricks Committee, and on the Widows Honor Luncheon committee. Marcia is very proud of the organization and the American Legion. Coming from a military family, she deeply appreciates the sacrifices made by military personnel. Marcia was married to Robert Fohey, USMC, who is a member of the American Legion and VFW. She is the daughter of Norman, US Navy, and Jean Buckwalter. Her son, Derek Fohey, and son-in-law, Trevor Spratt, are both Marines.
“Marcia never knows a stranger. She is tireless in her efforts in the community, volunteering in many different aspects of small-town life, helping to make Palmyra a place we want to live in,” said Carol Lockett, President of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #174.
Parade organizer Nancy Goellner added, “Marcia Fohey has been active in the Legion Auxiliary as long as I can remember. She has always given full support to her military family, friends and fellow Auxiliary members. During her years at Marion County R-II School she made sure that the students understood the importance of remembering our soldiers and taking the time to thank them for their service. Plus she helped the Auxiliary make the best cinnamon rolls to sell as a fundraiser. We are so happy to have Marcia as this year’s Grand Marshall for the Flag Day Parade.
