Hallsville, Mo. (Aug. 30) – The Palmyra Panthers opened their season with a thrilling 42-40 double overtime victory against Hallsville on Friday night. In a game that tested their resilience and determination, the Panthers emerged victorious, powered by a balanced offensive attack and key defensive plays.
Quarterback Rylan Compton played a pivotal role in the win, completing 9 of 16 passes for 94 yards, including a touchdown and a crucial two-point conversion pass. Despite two interceptions, Compton’s poise under pressure was evident, especially in the overtime periods.
The Panthers’ ground game was led by Wyatt Augspurg, who carried the ball 31 times for 180 yards. Augspurg’s performance included a rushing touchdown and a two-point conversion that proved vital in the tightly contested game. Landon Carroll was also instrumental, rushing 13 times for 44 yards and scoring three touchdowns, each of which kept Palmyra in the fight as the game went down to the wire. Pierce White added another rushing touchdown and a two-point conversion.
In the air, White was the standout receiver, hauling in 6 catches for 35 yards, including a touchdown and a two-point conversion reception. Key receptions from Laden Simmons and JT Thomas also contributed to the Panthers’ offensive success, with Simmons catching a 32-yard pass and Thomas adding a 19- yard reception.
Defensively, the Panthers made crucial plays to help secure the win. Landon Carroll’s interception, which he returned 52 yards for a touchdown, was a game-changer. Raeson Miller also grabbed an interception, while Henley Snow had a standout performance with two sacks for a loss of 15 yards and a blocked pass. Snow, along with Tate Hammond, applied consistent pressure on Hallsville’s quarterback, each recording three QB hurries.
Despite their success, the Panthers had to overcome several setbacks, including 10 penalties that cost them 80 yards. Offensively, they were flagged for holding twice, along with a personal foul, an illegal man downfield, and a false start. Defensively, the Panthers were penalized three times for encroachment and twice for pass interference.
Special teams saw limited action due to Hallsville’s strategy of kicking onside, but Compton managed 183 yards on six kickoffs. White had one kickoff return, but Hallsville’s strategy kept Palmyra’s return game in check.
In the end, it was the Panthers’ ability to execute in the clutch that secured their 42- 40 victory in double overtime. The win sets a positive tone for the season, as Palmyra showed they can handle the pressure and come through in critical moments. The Panthers will look to build on this momentum as they prepare for their next matchup.
