Winners of the National FFA Food Science and Technology Career Development Event (CDE) were announced during the second session of the 97th National FFA Convention & Expo in Indianapolis. Mr. Ray Pieniazek of Texas served as superintendent of this year’s event.The top ten individuals and the national winning team members received cash awards to recognize their success in the event.The National FFA Food Science and Technology CDE is designed to test a student’s basic knowledge of food science as well as the student’s ability to apply this knowledge to practical situations. Each team participates in a timed team product development project, and each individual participates in practicums involving food sensory evaluation and food safety and sanitation as well as a written exam. This event, held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis, is one of many educational activities at the National FFA Convention & Expo in which FFA members apply classroom knowledge to real-life situations.
During the National food Science CDE competition Palmyra, Missouri was represented by Ava Fohey, Marissa Gottman, Ashton Lovegreen, and Wesley Summers. Overall the team scored 8th place. Marissa Gottman was ranked as the 3rd high individual. All participants are ranked by their scores and categorized. Marissa Gottman was a Gold Medal participant. Ashton Lovegreen was also a Gold Medal participant. Wesley Summers was a Silver Medal participant. Ava Fohey was a Bronze Medal participant. By their overall score Palmyra was in the Gold Medal category.
The team won an all expenses paid trip to the International Production and Processing Expo in Atlanta, GA paid for by the US Poultry Federation.
