Palmyra’s senior duo of Sydney Compton and Clare Williams delivered a commanding performance Friday night, leading the Lady Panthers to a hard-fought 59-54 win over Canton in girls’ basketball.
Compton led the way with 29 points, including several clutch baskets in the second half, while Williams contributed 22 points and controlled the tempo during critical moments. Together, the two accounted for all but three of Palmyra’s points, combining offensive firepower with standout defensive plays that turned into fast-break opportunities.
Canton showcased a balanced scoring effort, with three players reaching double figures. Kenna Oliver and Macy Glasgow each tallied 12 points, while Chayse Uhlmeyer added 11. Despite staying within striking distance throughout the game, Canton struggled with turnovers, committing 20 and missing key shots in crucial moments.
The game was tight early, with Canton holding a narrow 12-10 lead after the first quarter. Palmyra surged ahead in the second quarter, thanks to a scoring burst by Williams, to take a 25-22 halftime advantage. Compton took over in the second half, hitting pivotal shots to keep Palmyra in control, while the defense held strong under pressure.
Palmyra improved to 2-1 on the season and will head to the Monroe City Tournament, where they’ll face Paris in the opening round. Canton, now 1-2, faces a tough stretch of games, starting with a road contest at Central Lee on Saturday.
