On the chilly morning of January 22, 2025, a potential disaster was narrowly avoided near Hannibal, Missouri, thanks to quick action and efficient coordination among local emergency teams. An ethanol tanker, carrying 3,000 gallons of the highly flammable liquid, encountered a mechanical failure with its tractor while en route.
The driver, aiming for a quick fix, pulled into the Ayerco at the junction of Routes 24 and 36, known to locals as the Rocket Truck Stop.
The incident escalated when the tanker’s front support gear collapsed while attempting to switch the faulty tractor with a replacement. The forward tank of the trailer cracked upon impact, leaking ethanol onto the truck stop’s concrete parking lot.
Palmyra Fire Department was first on the scene, quickly followed by Hannibal’s specialized HazMat response unit. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources in Macon was alerted to the potential hazard, prompting immediate preventive measures. Marion County Highway Department delivered emergency supplies of sand to build a containment dike, while Roberts Towing provided absorbent booms and clay to manage the spill.
Efforts to mitigate the spill included the deployment of a secondary tanker to transfer the remaining ethanol from the compromised vehicle. Roberts Towing’s heavy-duty crane managed to stabilize the trailer to prevent further damage, although it was determined that the kingpin was too damaged to allow for traditional towing solutions.
Approximately 200 gallons of ethanol spilled during the incident, but thanks to the swift containment measures, nearly all of it was prevented from entering the local ecosystem. Cleanup operations were scheduled for the following day.
