The Palmyra Panthers secured a commanding 53-44 victory over the South Shelby Cardinals on Friday, February 7, 2025, at South Shelby High School. With this win, the Panthers advanced to a 3-0 record in the Clarence Cannon Conference, fueled by standout performances from Mason Smith, Hudson Bock, and Luke Sheppard.
Hudson Bock opened the scoring with a three-pointer, but back-to-back baskets by Pryce Eagan and Noah Wilt gave the Cardinals an early 4-3 lead. The Panthers regained control briefly, only for Cooper Elsen’s free throw to tie the game, followed by a basket from Preston Elsen that put South Shelby ahead 7-5.
Palmyra responded with baskets from Luke Sheppard and Bock to take a 9-7 lead. South Shelby countered with consecutive scores from Cooper Seaton and Colt Schmitz, pulling ahead 11-9 with 1:12 left in the opening quarter. The Panthers closed the first quarter on a pivotal 6-0 run, highlighted by another three-pointer from Bock, to take a 15- 11 lead.
The Panthers steadily extended their advantage in the second quarter. Bock added two more baskets, and Raeson Miller scored to make it 21-14 with 5:30 remaining in the half. Wilt cut into the deficit with two free throws, but Mason Smith’s personal 5-0 run pushed the lead to 26-16.
Gabe Bowen added a free throw and Wilt scored again for the Cardinals, narrowing the gap to 26-19. However, Palmyra answered with five points from Sheppard to go up 31-19. In the final minute of the half, South Shelby found momentum with seven straight points. Preston Elsen scored twice, and Eagan hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to bring the Cardinals within five at 31-26.
Waylen Owens opened the second half with a basket for South Shelby, trimming the lead to 31-28. Palmyra regained control with buckets from Smith and Sheppard to push the lead back to 35-29. The Cardinals kept pace as Preston Elsen scored to make it 35-31, and Eagan’s three-pointer cut the deficit to 37-34 with 2:18 left in the third quarter. The teams traded baskets to close out the quarter, with Palmyra leading 39-36.
In the fourth quarter, Palmyra began to pull away. Smith, Bock, Miller, and Pierce White each contributed to an 8-2 run that gave the Panthers a 47-38 lead with 5:08 remaining. The Cardinals managed to close within 49-42 with three minutes left, but the Panthers held firm, securing the 53-44 victory.
Mason Smith led the Panthers with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Hudson Bock added 14 points, and Luke Sheppard finished with 12 points and five consecutive points in key moments. Raeson Miller also contributed with 10 rebounds.
For South Shelby, Pryce Eagan led the team with 10 points, including two clutch three-pointers, while Noah Wilt chipped in nine points and six rebounds.
