The Palmyra Varsity Panthers showed resilience, firepower, and flashes of dominance this past week, winning two out of three games to improve their season record to 4-6. A dramatic comeback against Bowling Green, a tough-fought battle with Macon, and a shutout win over Macomb highlighted a week where the Panthers’ grit was on full display.
Panthers Explode in Fourth to Overcome Bowling Green, 18-7
On Monday, Palmyra overcame an early deficit in spectacular fashion, erupting for 15 runs in the fourth inning to rally past Bowling Green 18-7. The Panthers trailed by as many as four runs, but their bats came alive when it mattered most.
Cade Lehman led the offensive charge, going 3-for-5 with two doubles and a single. Logan Kroeger delivered the biggest blow of the night with a bases-clearing triple in the fourth. Both Lehman and Kroeger finished with three RBIs each.
The Panthers racked up 15 hits, with multiple-hit performances from Bryant Horstmeier, Brodie Webb, Ty Haskins, and Rylan Compton. Patience at the plate also paid off, as Palmyra drew eight walks—two each from Kroeger and Haskins.
On the mound, Haskins picked up the win, battling through four innings and limiting Bowling Green to seven runs. Webb slammed the door in relief with a scoreless fifth. Defensively, Palmyra was flawless, committing no errors and showing sharp execution throughout.
Horstmeier Shines, but Panthers Fall to Macon 10-4
Tuesday brought a more challenging matchup, as Palmyra fell 10-4 to Macon despite another standout performance from Bryant Horstmeier. The junior went 3-for-4 with a double and two singles, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Macon’s 13-hit onslaught.
The Panthers started strong, with Colby Jones driving in the game’s first run in the opening frame. Jones would finish 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Kroeger added two hits in three at-bats.
However, a costly error and timely hits from Macon in the second inning shifted momentum, giving the visitors a 2-1 lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Horstmeier went five innings on the mound, surrendering four runs (two earned), and Palmyra turned four double plays defensively in a bright spot for the team.
Jones Tosses Shutout as Panthers Blank Macomb, 4-0
Palmyra bounced back in a big way on Thursday, riding a dominant pitching performance from Colby Jones to a 4-0 win over the Macomb Bombers.
Jones was locked in from the start, tossing a complete-game shutout while striking out eight and allowing just four hits. The right-hander was in full control, walking only three and keeping the Bombers from mounting any serious threats.
The offense gave him quick support. Ty Haskins opened the scoring with an RBI double in the first inning, and Webb followed with a two-run single to give Palmyra an early 3-0 lead. Webb led the team with two RBIs, while Jones and Kroeger also collected two hits each. Defensively, the Panthers continued their clean play, turning a double play and committing no errors.
