Marion County’s baseball team split a pair of road games this week, dominating Madison with a 14-0 win on Monday before falling to Highland 9-3 on Tuesday after a late-inning collapse.
In the rout over Madison, Marion County exploded for 12 runs in the fourth inning to secure the shutout victory. The big frame featured RBI hits from Colton Swisher, Riley Baldwin, Brayden Anderson and Nathan Wright, along with multiple errors and a walk that allowed runs to score. Wright and Porter Britt each drove in runs in the first inning to put the Mustangs ahead early.
Wright also delivered on the mound, pitching a complete-game two-hitter. He struck out four and walked three across five shutout innings. Swisher and Joey Lagemann each collected two hits, while Wright led the team with three RBIs. The Mustangs finished with nine hits, four stolen bases and no errors in the field.
But momentum didn’t carry into Tuesday’s contest at Highland, where a five-run fifth inning doomed Marion County in a 9-3 loss. Highland took an early lead, scoring in each of the first three innings, but Marion County battled back to tie the game 3-3 in the fourth thanks to a Lagemann double and a Wright single.
The Cougars regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth and broke the game open in the fifth with three hits, two errors, and a hit batter. Lagemann started for Marion County, striking out five in two innings of work. Levi Wright led the offense with a 2-for-3 performance, while Nathan Wright drove in two runs.
