Multiple resurfacing and bridge upgrades proposed through 2030
PALMYRA, Mo. — Marion County is set to receive a series of highway resurfacing and bridge improvement projects as part of the Missouri Department of Transportation’s Draft 2026–2030 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP). The draft plan, which is available for public review and comment through June 6, outlines construction-ready and long-range scoping projects across the region.
Among the highlights is a pavement improvement project on Business U.S. 61, covering multiple disconnected sections through Palmyra and near the junction of Routes 24 and 61. This project also includes a bridge improvement over Route 24 located 1.6 miles north of Route F. The combined effort is designed to improve roadway surfaces and extend bridge life in a high-traffic corridor. Construction is expected between 2027 and 2028, with an estimated cost of $1 million.
MoDOT is also proposing a major culvert improvement project along U.S. 61 in Hannibal, running from just south of Route MM to Huckleberry Drive. This project is valued between $5 million and $10 million, and preliminary engineering is currently underway.
Several scoping-phase projects are included for Marion County as well:
· Route DD (Ralls County line to Huntington Lane) — Pavement improvement
· Route Z (two segments between Route 168 and Route 36 near Monroe City) — Pavement improvement
· Route W and Route 61 outer roads in Hannibal — Surface upgrades
· Bridge A0555 on Business 61 near Palmyra — Rehabilitation
· Bridge A3151 on U.S. 61 near Taylor — Improvement evaluation
In addition, ADA-compliance upgrades are being planned for pedestrian facilities along Business 61 in Palmyra and other locations, ensuring accessibility for all users.
These projects are backed by a combination of state funds and federal programs, including the Surface Transportation Block Grant (STBG) and the National Highway Performance Program (NHPP). Together, they represent a continued investment in improving mobility and safety for Marion County residents.
MoDOT is inviting public comment on the draft plan through June 6, 2025. Citizens can share their feedback by emailing [email protected], calling 1-888-ASK-MODOT (275-6636), or visiting modot.org.
The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission will review all comments and vote on the final version of the STIP on July 9, 2025.
